Damned speeders!!
Speed limit is 70. I'm doing 70-75, in the right-hand lane. There's not too much traffic. Some creep comes flying up behind me doing about 95, gets right on my ass and starts blasting his horn, as though I'm the one who's at fault. Then, he zips around me, flipping me off... and I notice his "I support the troops" bumper sticker, complete with American flag. hat's a good citizen, breaking the law every single day. When did the idea of "law abiding citizen" become "whatever the hell I feel like doing"?
It speaks to a deeper, more fundamental issue, however. People are only interested in an illusory feeling of control, at the expense of nearly any other concern. That illusion causes people to drive faster than safe, even when it will only save them a few seconds or minutes at most. It causes them to drive right on your bumper, as though being 10 feet closer to you will get them where they are going any faster. They creep into intersections on a red light, just as if that extra 3 feet will save them any time at all.
What it is, I think, is that people need to feel like they have control. Other cars are not under their control. The speed limits are not under their control. The traffic lights are under the control of SATAN. So, they turn into aggressive creeps, to re-assert that control.
